PLDT Enterprise, DTI, and PLDT-Smart Foundation Drive Growth with Smart Cart Initiative in NCR

PLDT Enterprise, in collaboration with the PLDT-Smart Foundation (PSF), has partnered with the Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) to further elevate the innovative Smart Carts initiative designed to empower Filipino micro, small, and medium enterprises (MSMEs).

This transformative program, which has already facilitated 12 Smart Carts endorsements across various regions in the Philippines since its launch in September 2024 and will continue to expand this 2025, highlights the PLDT Group’s much broader commitment to supporting MSMEs in building resilient and sustainable businesses.

Chet Alviz, Vice President and Head of Enterprise Marketing, stated that, “At PLDT Enterprise, we prioritize working with partners who share our vision of empowering communities and enabling growth. We support the Department of Trade and Industry’s mandate to drive MSME development in the Philippines, and our partnership reflects a shared commitment to providing entrepreneurs with the resources and tools they need to thrive in an increasingly digital economy. By collaborating with DTI, we are creating opportunities for MSMEs to expand their reach and enhance their operations, ensuring that no Filipino entrepreneur is left behind in this age of innovation.”

Equipping Filipino Entrepreneurs for Success

At the heart of the Smart Carts initiative is the goal to enable MSMEs to expand their reach and adapt to the digital economy. Each Smart Cart comes equipped with digital tools, including Smart Retailer Kits and Maya digital payment solutions, to empower entrepreneurs with enhanced operational capabilities. These tools are designed to support efficient business operations while providing customers with more seamless service experiences.

sther O. Santos, President of the PLDT-Smart Foundation, emphasized the significance of these efforts, explaining, “The Smart Carts symbolize more than just economic support—they represent our joint mission to equip, train, and connect MSMEs with the resources and knowledge they need to thrive in today’s competitive market. This initiative embodies the spirit of shared growth and sustainability.”

Strategic Collaboration with DTI

The partnership with DTI plays a vital role in ensuring the effective implementation of the program, as well as providing the necessary training and education to equip beneficiaries with the digital knowledge and expertise. As part of this growing advocacy, DTI will aid in facilitating endorsements and turnovers of Smart Carts to priority regions across the country, enabling local entrepreneurs to access critical resources.

Each turnover represents another step forward in driving MSME development in both urban and rural communities.

Blesila Lantayona, DTI Undersecretary and Supervising Head for the Regional Operations Group, shared, “Through our collaboration with PLDT Enterprise and the PLDT-Smart Foundation, we aim to provide MSMEs with tools and training that enable them to grow their businesses and contribute to the economic recovery and resilience of our country.”

Empowering MSMEs Across the Philippines

Recently, Smart Carts were turned over to four inspiring MSMEs in the National Capital Region. These beneficiaries include:

Naredo Romeo Jr. - Owner of Naredo Twister Fries, based in Tondo, Manila, specializing in potato fries.

Felisa D. Trinidad - Proprietor of Fely’s Boneless Lechon in Taguig City.

Ronald Capellan - Entrepreneur behind Bee Blessings in Quezon City, offering calamansi concentrate, ready-to-drink juices, and wild honey.

Lysyia Sanchez Gatoc - Operator of El Biko Kakanin/Triple E Food and Beverage Station in Valenzuela City, featuring assorted kakanin and fruit juices.

The Smart Carts are designed to help these businesses improve efficiency, broaden their market reach, and sustain their livelihoods.

This initiative supports PLDT Group’s commitment to sustainability, specifically SDG 8: Decent Work and Economic Growth, by promoting inclusive growth and innovation. Equipped with tools like Maya digital payments and Smart Postpaid plans, these carts enable MSMEs to streamline operations, enhance customer service, and embrace digital business solutions.

A Holistic Approach to Empowerment

Beyond physical resources, the initiative offers comprehensive support to MSMEs through the Equip, Train, and Connect (ETC) framework. Beneficiaries receive training on business strategies, marketing, and financial management, empowering them to make informed decisions and sustain their enterprises.

This initiative is part of PLDT Enterprise’s ongoing commitment to championing the success of MSMEs nationwide. With a vision to create meaningful impact and foster economic development, PLDT Enterprise continues to drive progress for Filipino entrepreneurs.
