MyPhone Rio Craze review

Spending over a week for the 4th Rio member, the MyPhone Rio Craze was an experience. Is it worth your money? Check out my review.
UI:

I’m fresh as I did a rundown to it’s older and bigger brother, Rio Fun and it’s no stranger to the UI of the Rio Craze (RC) except that you can really feel the fluidness of this device thanks to Android Kitkat. The app icons reminds me a bit of the iPhone.

PHONE AND MESSAGING:

The phone UI this time has the same as to the Infinity Lite and the messaging has a mix of the stock Android Jellybean. Calling for both sims are a-ok using Globe to Globe calls as well as to sending and receiving texts. Quality of MyPhone came out to this budget Android phone.

APPS AND STORAGE:

The lesson that they learned from their consumers continues to this device as you can move and install apps via micro SD. It is a big help coz the app storage only has 123 MB, 83 MB are usable plus the phone storage only has over 10 MB so sideloading apps with 10 MB and over can only be done thru the expandable memory. The real RAM is over 220 MB which is good enough for social media stuff, calling, texting and mobile surfing.

ENTERTAINMENT:

Like a typical Pinoy Android phone, the  RC has FM Radio with RDS and FM recording although I didn’t have a chance to check the file format of a recorded FM Radio file. It’s signal is nice and got no problems. The music app UI is also the same as the Infinity Lite and Rio Fun. Good thing that this phone is CTIA complaiant even though the package doesn’t come up with a CTIA complaiant earphone. Videos can only be played up to HD

BATTERY:

I had a video battery rundown test by looping some HD mp4 videos, using MX Players with 8 brightness, 13 volume, 25% phone brightness, 1 sim on without Bluetooth, WiFi and 2G internet and I got at 5 hours and 4 minutes which is not that good, not that bad. I wonder if this new-to-the-eye 1.3 Ghz dual core chipset has a factor to this thing. There’s only a minimal heat after I had my own video battery test. In my real life usage by calling, texting, surfing through WiFi, music, videos, blogging and photo editing, I got a max. of 15 hours which is enough this time for it’s 1,300 mah removable battery.

BENCHMARKS:

I said that the chipset is quite new to the local Android phone market coz of it’s 1.3 Ghz Mediatek MT6571 dual-core (no, this is not a typo compared to the MT6572) which I think still the only one in the country so far. When I had the Antutu test, it managed to score over 12,000 which is not that much difference to a normal MT6572 which can do at over 11,000. You can check out the other standard benchmark tests:

CAMERA:

It’s already a dead giveaway on what we can expect in a 1.3 MP rear camera. It can only do justice during daytime or with good lighting condition. The flash only works at night if you really put your phone closer to your subject. These are the camera UI and my daytime & night time camera samples.

EXTRAS:

The back casing is quite elegant for it’s price as to compare to today’s Lumia phones. The volume rocker and power/unlock button are attached to the back case which is a smart thing if one or all of those physical buttons might have some trouble (as I hope MyPhone will gonna sell those back cases soon). The dual regular sim slot is kinda unique that it reminds me of the old Firefly S080 featurephone. The sim 1 slot is on the top and sim 2 is at the bottom. In order for you to take out the sim on the sim 2 slot, you have to pull a little “handle” and push it after you already put up the sim card. Same with the Rio Fun, it has the outer plastic covering.

VERDICT:

The MyPhone Rio Craze is a good option for people who might think that the size of the Rio Fun phablet is too big to their hands (or for the kids)  but  who want to have a simple call and text phone, doesn’t matter if there’s no 3G as long as it is dual sim and WiFi in their usual places, Android Kitkat ready, more variety in colors and with a trusted local mobile phone brand. Minus points to me is the small ROM (as there are already a number of more affordable phones from competitors with at least 2 GB ROM) , no built-in screen protector and the non-CTIA stock earphones.  Plus points to me are the CTIA complaiance to the device, the small packaging and nice overall design compare to Rio Fun.  I’ll give a 3.5 out of 5 to MyPhone Rio Craze which is priced at P1,999.
