Sikat Pinoy National Food Fair 2014 Day 1 coverage

It’s our 2nd time to be in a Sikat Pinoy Fair, this time which gave us more interest is because its food. Imagine, all of the unique and delicious foods from all over the Philippine archipelago in the 3 halls of SM Megatrade Hall.

The opening ceremony led by DTI Usec. Zeny Maglaya and DTI Sec. Gregory Domingo. There was also a memorandum of agreement (MOA) signing happened for the opening of  DTI Business Centers at SM Malls. Guests and members of the media and blogging community enjoyed the “Sikat Pinoy” cocktail drink that were served by the bartenders from Destileria Limtauco.

After that, we started the booth hopping. There are about 230 booths in the venue from local delicacies, sweets, drinks, teas, health supplements, viands, processed foods and more. Our interest was more into new products as well as a possibility to see a beloved product.

First stop when we saw the Muscovado sugar, Cordillera coffee and the Kape Musang at the Cordillera Products booth of Ms. Mary Grace Young. We were amazed coz we only knew that Muscovado is only available in the Visayas area and the Kape Musang somewhere in Mindoro. They offered free taste of their Cordillera coffee. From our taste, we felt the goodness of Arabica coffee that was really grown from the mountains.

Second was the booth with Chica-carabao and Carabeef Tapa as they were based from Cagayan province. As we had a taste run of their Chica-carabao Garlic flavor, it was good. How I wish, I had a mini bottle of vinegar in my pocket to test it with a dip. Their carabeef tapa costs P140 for ½ kilo while the chica-carabao has a price tag of P40.

Then, to Zambales. We had a stop to Zamango Co. Products as they offer unique products like the Mango Leather (consists of pure dried mango which is the “cheek-like” part) and the Zambales Mango-made dried mangoes. They said that their dried mangoes do  not use sugar compare to others as you will taste the natural sweetness of the fruit. We had a bite of the Mango Leather which is a great sub to the usual dried mangoes. Both products sold at P35/pc. or 3 for P100

Next stop, Davao. We tried the very unique carrot-calamansi spread on top of crackers and we just discovered another good option for a filling to our next bread order.

To Tarlac. We had a break at Good Earth Farms and Foods booth as we got a 1st encounter of a lemongrass juice or tanglad. As some of you know of a lil peculiar taste of it, they added honey as natural sweetener.A 350 ml. bottle of it costs P25. They also have tanglad tea which is only P30 per pack. As the daughter of the owner said, you only need a pinch amount to have a mug of tanglad tea which we think that we can make 100 mugs out of that pack. They also have 2 different kinds of salabat powder which both had turmeric. They also offer citronella-based mosquito repellent that can apply both on your skin or near your surroundings. They had a statement to us that all of their products are organic.

Makati, we went to Andy Albao Enterprise booth as they offer fresh-to-the-eye and innovative coco-based products like the coco and chocolate spread, coconut butter (which is made of coconut meat), the coconut sauce that tastes like oyster sauce, coconut jam with coco sugar and the teriyaki sauce which is also made of coconut. You can check their products at www.cocowonder.com.ph

To Pila, Laguna. We encountered the ladies of Fisshu Corner as they offer Panggasius-based products like daing, fish floss (which is the scrap part or drippings of fried panggasius), the Panggasius smoked fish, Panggasius fish cake and the item that made us amazed was their Panggasius fish fillet which is only P80/kilo. Wow, in our nearby supermarket the sale price of it is P110/kilo (Panggasius is also known as cream dory) and it was made in Vietnam. We looking forward to order from them soon as we help our fellow kababayan. Of course, their panggasius are entirely produced in Pila, Laguna.

Manila/Zamboanga area, we had a stop at Permex Producer & Exporter, Inc. , makers of Paradiso and King Cup sardines and one of our fave tuna, Permex Tuna (mark our words, their tuna is lot better than the leading brand) . We were really happy to meet the people behind the company as the last time that we ate a Permex tuna was years ago when I bought a can in Walter Mart Calamba. Good thing, they are under negotiations with another known supermarket (Clue: the green one) to strengthen their brand exposure to consumers which we hope that it will end in a good note. They also shared a secret that a known “sosyal” bakeshop and 2 known donut brands are using their tuna for their products. Another proof that their tuna is so good for an enticing price. As we had tuna in flakes in oil with crackers, no changes. Their tuna is so so delicious. You wanna know the secret? Better to stand by for our podcast soon featuring the said food fair.

Our last stop was in Cainta, Rizal as we had an intro to Spirulina from Azrec Spirulina. This another nice food supplement discovery is beneficial in our well being. We had a glimpse of the nutrition facts of their capsule form and woah! A lot of vitamins and minerals. They shared a fact that their products are locally produced in Rizal. The 100 pc. capsule in a bottle costs P1000 while the 30 pc. capsule counterpart is P340. Good thing that you can order their products at Lazada at even more affordable price.

This was one of our great fairs that we had a visit so far since our blog was born. We had a lot of pics that we cannot share by words to the point that we will have a podcast episode of this fair soon. Of course, we included the contact details on how you can order on the products that we visited.

Hurry as the Sikat Pinoy National Food Fair 2014 will be up only until March 30, 2014 from 10am-9pm at the Megatrade Hall, 5th flr. Of SM Megamall. We assure that your allotted time and money will be a worthwhile experience.
